Lower back pain is frustrating because it often improves for a few days, then comes back without warning. People try stretching, heat, massage, or rest, and while these things help temporarily, the relief never seems to stick.
There is a reason for that, and it has nothing to do with a weak back or a slipped disc.
Why back pain keeps returning
Back pain is usually a combination of stiff joints, tight muscles, under active stabilisers, and movement habits that overload the same area repeatedly. When one part of the system is not doing its job, another part has to compensate. Over time that compensation becomes the source of pain.
Why quick fixes fail
Quick fixes only target the symptoms. Stretching loosens tight muscles. Massage reduces tension. Heat improves blood flow. Rest reduces irritation. None of these change the underlying mechanics, so the pain returns as soon as you go back to normal life.
What actually works
To fix back pain properly, you need a structured approach.
You need to calm the pain down with hands on treatment that reduces irritation.
You need to identify the movement pattern causing the problem, which is often not where the pain is felt.
You need to strengthen the stabilisers so the deep core and hip muscles support the spine.
You need to build resilience by gradually increasing load so the back can handle daily demands without flaring up.
This is why I often start people on a three session block. It gives enough time to calm things down, correct the pattern, and build a foundation that lasts.
