Hip Pain When Sitting or Standing Up

Hip pain when sitting or standing is common and fixable. LF Therapy helps clients in Weybridge, Esher and Surbiton identify the real cause and recover fully.

Hip pain is one of those issues that creeps into daily life quietly. You might feel it when sitting down, standing up, getting out of the car, or turning in bed. Most people assume it is age or wear and tear, but most hip pain comes from movement patterns that are completely fixable.

Why the hip becomes irritated

The hip is a powerful joint that relies on strong muscles around it for support. When those muscles switch off or become imbalanced, the joint starts to take more load than it should. Over time this creates irritation in the tendons, joint capsule, or surrounding muscles.

Common causes include weak glutes, tight hip flexors, reduced rotation, or poor control during everyday movements. This is especially common in people who sit for long periods or commute regularly — something I see a lot of across Surrey.

Why rest does not help

Rest reduces irritation, but it does not improve strength or control. As soon as you return to normal activity, the pain returns because the underlying pattern has not changed. This is why so many people feel temporary relief but no long term improvement.

What actually works

A proper hip rehabilitation plan focuses on:

  • Strengthening the glutes so the hip is supported
  • Improving hip rotation to reduce joint stress
  • Releasing tight muscles that pull the hip out of alignment
  • Correcting movement patterns during sitting, standing, and walking
  • Building resilience through gradual load

When the hip is supported properly, the pain settles quickly and stays away.
