The Hidden Impact of Stress on Physical Pain

Stress directly causes physical pain. LF Therapy helps clients in Kingston, Surbiton and Esher understand the mind-body connection and break the tension cycle.

By Lorenzo Ottanelli, HCPC-registered Physiotherapist

Stress does not just affect the mind. It changes how the body moves and holds tension. Many people carry stress in their neck, shoulders, jaw, or lower back without realising it — and in many cases, addressing the physical pattern is the fastest way to break the cycle.

Why stress creates pain

Stress increases muscle tone, reduces breathing quality, and heightens sensitivity in the nervous system. Over time this creates real physical discomfort that does not go away just because the stressful period ends.

Why it becomes a cycle

Pain increases stress, and stress increases pain. The two feed each other. Breaking the cycle usually requires addressing the physical side directly rather than waiting for life to calm down.

What actually helps

  • Breathing work to calm the nervous system
  • Strength training to build physical resilience
  • Hands on treatment to release held tension
  • Daily habits that reduce physical stress loading
  • Improving sleep and recovery quality
