Knee Pain When Walking or Climbing Stairs

Knee pain on stairs or walking has clear, fixable causes. LF Therapy helps clients in Surbiton, Tolworth and New Malden recover with targeted knee rehabilitation.

Knee pain can creep in slowly or appear suddenly after a small movement. It makes stairs uncomfortable, walking frustrating, and daily life more tiring than it should be. The good news is that most knee pain has clear, fixable causes.

Why the knee becomes painful

The knee is a hinge joint that relies heavily on the hips and ankles for support. When those areas are not doing their job, the knee takes the load. Over time this creates irritation in the joint, tendons, or surrounding muscles.

Common causes include weak hip muscles, tight quads or calves, reduced ankle mobility, poor movement patterns, or previous injuries that never fully recovered. The knee is often the victim, not the cause.

Why rest does not solve the problem

Rest reduces irritation, but it does not improve strength, mobility, or control. As soon as you return to normal activity, the pain returns because the underlying mechanics have not changed.

What actually works

A proper knee rehabilitation plan focuses on improving hip strength so the knee is supported, restoring ankle mobility so the leg moves smoothly, releasing tight muscles that pull the knee out of alignment, strengthening the quads and hamstrings, and correcting movement patterns during walking, squatting, and stairs.

When the whole leg works together, the knee stops taking the strain.

When to get help

If your knee pain is stopping you from walking comfortably or limiting your activity, it is worth getting it assessed early. I work with clients in Surbiton and across Surrey — knee issues respond very well to targeted treatment when caught early. Book a knee assessment →
